EAR TRAINER MAKES IT EASY TO LEARN THE SYMBOLS OF THE INTERNATIONAL PHONETIC ASSOCIATION
• TRAINING THE PHONETIC SYMBOLS
These exercises you see the phonetic labels of a speech sound and you choose the correct phonetic symbol from 5 options given.
Eartrainer tells you immediately whether your choice was correct. Moreover, you can listen to the speech sound which is presented as a close-up video so that you can also clearly see the details of its articulation.
RECOGNISING SPEECH SOUNDS •
In these exercises you listen to short words which contain a single plosive, nasal etc. You have to identify that speech sound and choose the correct phonetic symbol from 5 options given.
The words are presented as close-up videos so that articulation is clearly visible. These exercises develop more advanced listening skills and knowledge of the phonetic symbols.
EAR TRAINER DEVELOPS YOUR PHONETIC ABILITY AND PRACTICAL PHONETICS SKILLS
• MAKING MINI TRANSCRIPTIONS
The mini transcriptions will get you started on phonetic transcription. You will hear words spoken by a trained phonetician. Some of the symbols are missing from the transcription and it is your task to provide the correct symbols for the missing sounds.
This is a level up from the previous exercises because you will have to identify more speech sounds in more complex environments. Your transciption is assessed and you get feedback on mistakes.
FULLY FLEDGED PHONETIC TRANSCRIPTIONS •
These advanced exercises integrate and consolidate the skills acquired in the previous exercises. You will hear words spoken by a trained phonetician and you have to do a phonetic transcription.
You will only get an indication of how many speech sounds you should expect. This type of exercise comes closest to real phonetic transcription.
EAR TRAINER FOLLOWS YOUR PROGRESS AND ANALYSES PHONETIC TRANSCRIPTION ERRORS
Eartrainer keeps a record of your transcription errors as you go along and identifies the most important problem areas. This is visualized on a survey screen for each of the the basic phonetic dimensions: voicing, place and manner of articulation. Results for consonants and vowels are presented separately. The red dots on the screen indicate problem areas.
This information helps you to focus on specific transcription problems that you might have.
